Setting up Outlook Express to access PVI Email

Outlook Express is a basic Email client that's a good choice for people who use Email infrequently, or just like to keep things simple. Best of all, Outlook Express is included FREE with Windows! Many users confuse Outlook Express with it's big brother Outlook because the names are so similar. However, the two programs have little in common other than the name. Outlook Express is purely a program for messaging, while Outlook adds many workgroup features like scheduling and document sharing.

The following instructions apply to Windows XP Professional. If you have a different version of Windows, your menus may vary slightly, but the information below will still apply.

To start Outlook Express, double click on the program's icon. In Windows XP, this is usually found under START | ALL PROGRAMS:

Now that Outlook Express is running, open the TOOLS | ACCOUNTS dialog:

Click on the ADD button, and then select MAIL:

Enter your name and email address when prompted and click NEXT. You will be presented with the Server settings dialog. Fill them out as shown below and click NEXT.

Option Note: If you use Outlook Express on more than one computer, you may want to choose IMAP instead of POP3 for the incoming mail server type. The IMAP format keeps your mailbox contents on the mail server instead of downloading everything to your computer like POP3. This can be desirable if you frequently switch between computers, such as a desktop and a laptop.

Fill in the Login information using the Email address and password provided by PVI or your supervisor. Be sure to use your complete email address as the Account name:

When you click on NEXT the wizard will tell you it is complete, but you haven't finished yet! Highlight the new account you just created and click on PROPERTIES:

Select the SERVERS tab and check the "My server requires authentication" box.  Almost done - just one more step...

Now select the ADVANCED tab. At the top of the window is a box that contains the SMTP port number. Change this number to 366 and click OK. You're done!

Option Note: The default SMTP port of 25 works for many customers, but because many residential ISPs choose to block this port we recommend using the alternate port 366.
