Using a Blackberry with PVI EmailHow Blackberry WorksBlackberry devices communicate exclusively through proprietary “Blackberry Internet Service” or BIS servers provided by RIM, the company that makes Blackberry devices. When you send a message from your Blackberry it is transmitted to one of RIM’s servers. The BIS server transmits your email like any mail server, but it uses the account information for the mailbox hosted on the PVI Productions mail server. The BIS server logs in to your PVI mailbox every few minutes and passes new messages to your device. No email is ever stored on the BIS server for any longer than it takes to shuttle it between your Blackberry device and the PVI mail server. Note: PVI does not provide realtime "push" messaging - there will be some delay between the time a message arrives at your mailbox and when you see it on your Blackberry. The length of this delay is dependant on the specific capabilities and configruation of your device and wireless provider.Security IssuesTo protect your privacy and prevent spammers from sending junk mail by posing as you (called “spoofing”), we require every connection to your PVI mailbox to be authenticated using your full email address as the username and your mailbox password. This means the BIS server must be configured to authenticate before attempting to send email through the PVI mail server. Setup your Blackberry to authenticate SMTP sessions (sending mail) using the same username and password used for receiving messages from your mailbox. Message ContinuityOne of the biggest challenges with using a mobile device for Email is keeping track of your messages. Most people want to be notified when messages come in via their Blackberry, but still be able to manage their mail from their desktop computer. The best solution is to set up both your computer and Blackberry to access your PVI account with the IMAP protocol. This ensures that all mail is stored on the mail server where you can easily access it from whichever device you are using. It is also possible to use the POP3 protocol on older Blackberry devices that don't support IMAP, but you must configure your Blackberry to leave a copy of each message on the server. Otherwise you'll keep missing messages from your Outlook mailbox because the Blackberry will be downloading and deleting email from the server before your computer ever sees it. |
