League-leading Copperheads blank Mill Run
Carmichaels increased its lead in the Fayette County Baseball League (FCBL) standings to a game-and-a-half following a 10-0 victory over Mill Run on Wednesday at Wana B Park in Carmichaels.
The 14-time FCBL champions improved to 8-2-1 in the league. Hopwood Village Pizza is in second place at 8-5 and the Charleroi Magicians are 2.5 games back in third with a record of 6-5-1.
The Oakland Oaks sit three games back in fourth at 7-7, and the Millers trail Dickie Krause’s squad by eight games at 2-12.
Dom Colarusso scored the only run Copperheads starter Kevin Bender would need on a wild pitch for a 1-0 lead in the first inning.
Ben Shields doubled to right field and scored on Brock Bonadio’s double to center field that also plated courtesy runner Anthony Romano for a 3-0 advantage.
Bender earned the win on the mound in pitching five scoreless innings. He yielded one hit with seven strikeouts and one walk. Liam Lohr allowed one hit in a scoreless frame, as Carmichaels put the game away in the sixth inning due to the 10-run rule.
Alex Vansickle walked with the bases loaded to extend the home team’s lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the second inning, and the Copperheads plated six runs in the sixth inning to invoke the 10-run rule.
Phil Pacarcik drove in two runs for a 6-0 cushion when he smacked a base hit to left field to score Bonadio and Robbie Wilson-Jones.
Romano scored on Gianni Cantini’s line-drive double to left field and Pacarcik crossed home plate on Jacob Rush’s base hit to left for an eight-run edge. Cantini scored the ninth run when Wilson-Jones reached first base safely on an error.
Rush scored the final run on Shield’s base hit to left field.
Teran Kemp and Colby Simmons had one hit apiece for Mill Run. Simmons doubled to left field in the second inning and Kemp reached on an infield single in the sixth, which advanced Luke Warrick to second. Warrick raced to third base on a wild pitch before Lohr forced two flyouts to end the frame.
OAKLAND 2, HOPWOOD 1 — The visitors had the tying run in scoring position, and the go-ahead run at first base, but the Oaks’ Andrew Catone recorded a strikeout to end the threat, inning and game in FCBL play at Garrett College in McHenry, Md.
Hopwood trailed by two entering the top of the seventh inning, but
Ryan Covelens started the frame off on the right foot for his team with a lead-off single to right field. Following a flyout, Matthew Firestone walked prior to being thrown out at second base when Chad Petrush reached first base safely on a fielder’s choice that advanced Covelens to third base.
Covelens scored on Justin Brestensky’s line drive to center field to cut the deficit to 2-1 before the final out.
Luke Ross earned the pitching victory after yielding one earned run on four hits over 6 â…“ innings. He struck out one and walked three. Catone threw the final â…” rds for the save.
Erik Streussnig took the loss, but had a quality outing with 10 strikeouts and three walks over six innings. He allowed two earned runs on five hits.
Covelens had two hits. Firestone had a hit and drew two walks, and Tate Musko added a single.
