Larkin breaks Fayette County scoring record in Lady Gators’ victory
Emma Larkin scored 27 points to not only help Geibel Catholic to a 67-32 victory over Carrick in non-section girls basketball action, but break Fayette County’s all-time scoring record on Monday at Carrick.
Larkin, a senior who will continue her academic and basketball careers at Belmont Abbey University in Belmont, N.C., has 2,453 points in her career.
Larkin came into Monday’s contest needing 14 points to tie the mark. Albert Gallatin’s Loui Hall (now Ellen Guillard) had the record with 2,440 career points. Guillard is currently the head coach at Allderdice.
The Lady Gators finished the regular season at 21-1. Their lone loss was a 51-50 setback to Serra Catholic in Section 2-1A play on Feb. 5.
Geibel will host St. Joseph (13-9) on Feb. 19 at 7 p.m. in the quarterfinals of the WPIAL Class 1A girls basketball playoffs.
In Monday’s contest against the Lady Raiders, the Lady Gators had a 29-9 lead after the first quarter and a 45-16 halftime advantage. Geibel outscored the home team, 15-7, in the third period for a 60-23 lead heading into the final frame. Carrick (13-7) had a 9-7 edge in the fourth period.
The Lady Gators’ Mallory Clemmer added 18 points. Teammate Janiah Darnell put in 10.
Arianna Morant led the Lady Raiders in scoring with 11 points. Skye Hall was in double figures with 10.
UNIONTOWN 78, BETH-CENTER 27 — Aierra Jenkins and Lyric McLee concluded their high school basketball careers with each senior scoring 20 points in the Lady Red Raiders’ non-section victory over the Lady Bulldogs at Beth-Center High School.
Jenkins, who will continue her academic, basketball and flag football careers at PennWest California, made eight field goals, including two 3-pointers, and was 2 of 3 at the foul line. McLee connected on nine field goals (one 3-pointer) and was 1 of 4 at the line.
Charley Murtha (14) and Aubree Long (12) were also in double figures for Uniontown (10-12).
Violet Trump led playoff-bound Beth-Center (10-11) with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
BROWNSVILLE 50, STO-ROX 41 — In her final high school basketball game, the Lady Falcons’ Ava Clark scored a game-high 27 points in a non-section victory at Brownsville Area High School.
Clark scored 364 points her senior season to end her career at Brownsville with 1,215.
Ramielle Grayson added 13 points for the Lady Falcons.
The Lady Vikings (8-12) were led in scoring by Kamiyah Thompson’s 13 points. Arianna Johnston had 11 for the visitors.
The Lady Falcons finished their season at 7-15.
WAYNESBURG CENTRAL 52, CALIFORNIA 38 — The Lady Raiders took control of a non-section battle between playoff teams in the second quarter and downed the Lady Trojans at California Area High School.
After both teams scored 11 points in the first quarter, Waynesburg (20-2) outscored the home team, 16-6, for a 27-17 lead at halftime.
The Lady Raiders had a 14-11 advantage in the third period and an 11-10 edge in the fourth frame.
Waynesburg’s Tess Pauley scored a game-high 24 points. Teammate Peyton Cowell added 12.
California (11-10) was led in scoring by Lila Mitchell, who put in 17 points. The Lady Trojans’ Hayley Gibson dropped 10.
WEST GREENE 52, BENTWORTH 36 — Kendra Tharp already had 1,000 points listed on her high school resume and she added 1,000 rebounds also by grabbing 23 to go along with 11 points against the host Lady Bearcats as West Greene picked up a non-section victory in a battle of playoff teams.
Jillissa Yeater scored a game-high 12 points in a balanced attack for West Greene (16-6). Teammate Sammi Zimmerman added 11 points and Madelyn Roberts put in 10.
Bella Moyer led Bentworth (9-13) in scoring with 11 points. Brielle Dillon had 10 for the home team.
BOYS BASKETBALL
WAYNESBURG CENTRAL 76, AQUINAS ACADEMY 74 — The Raiders rallied from a four-point deficit after three quarters to edge the Crusaders in non-section play between two playoff teams at Waynesburg Central High School.
Aquinas (9-12) had a 58-54 lead heading into the fourth period, but the Raiders (7-15) used a 22-16 advantage in the final frame to earn the victory.
Waynesburg had a 20-17 lead after the opening quarter, but trailed 38-35 after Aquinas won the second period, 21-15. The visitors had a 20-19 edge in the third quarter.
The Crusaders’ Sam Duer scored a game-high 37 points.
The Raiders’ Dane Woods put in 30. Teammate Cole Headlee dropped 20.
DERRY 54, SOUTHMORELAND 44 — The Section 3-4A champion Trojans rallied from an eight-point halftime deficit to top the Section 4-3A champion Scotties in non-section play at Southmoreland High School.
Derry (16-6) had a 9-7 lead after the first quarter, but the Scotties (14-8) used a 16-6 advantage in the second period for a 23-15 edge heading into the third period. The Trojans outscored the home team, 20-12, in the third and 19-9 in the fourth frame.
Derry’s Stanley Rajkovich had a game-high 19 points. Teammate Brayden Robinson put in 16.
Brady Sherbondy led Southmoreland in scoring with nine points.
JEFFERSON-MORGAN 49, BROWNSVILLE 26 — The Rockets led early on and never looked back en route to a non-section victory over the Falcons at Jefferson-Morgan Junior/Senior High School.
The playoff-bound Rockets (21-1) were led in scoring by Jeremiah Robertson’s 24 points.
Jaiden Praster paced Brownsville with 10 points.
