Frazier earns top seed in WPIAL volleyball playoffs
Ten local teams qualify for postseason

Frazier advanced to the WPIAL Class A volleyball final last year, but lost to section rival Greensburg Central Catholic.
The Lady Commodores are eager to return to the district championship match this season and avenge last year’s setback at AHN Arena on the campus of Peters Township High School.
The Lady Centurions didn’t qualify for the WPIAL Class A playoffs, so a new champion will be crowned on Nov. 1. All championship matches will be contested at AHN Arena.
Frazier ran through Section 4-A with a record of 8-0, including two victories over Greensburg Central Catholic. The Lady Commodores were 11-3 overall, and because of their success, the WPIAL volleyball committee awarded Mandy Hartman’s team the top seed in Class A on Friday afternoon. The Lady Commodores’ three setbacks were to Class 3A playoff teams Trinity and Belle Vernon, and Class 2A Waynesburg Central, who finished the season undefeated at 18-0. The Lady Raiders are the second seed in Class 2A.
Frazier is seeking its third district title after winning gold in 2010 and 2022.
The Lady Commodores open first-round play this Wednesday against Union (8-10) at Henry DiVirgilio Field House on the campus of Frazier High School. The match is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.
Carmichaels (7-11) drew the No. 9 seed, and the Lady Mikes will face Rochester (11-6) in the first round at Henry DiVirgilio Field House prior to the Lady Commodores’ match at 6 p.m.
Beth-Center won Section 3-1A with a record of 9-0. The Lady Bulldogs finished with an overall record of 13-2. Their two setbacks were to Southmoreland, a playoff team in Class 2A, and Waynesburg Central.
Beth-Center is the second seed in Class A. It hosts Western Beaver (12-7) on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
California (13-4) plays Beaver County Christian (8-7) in the 6 p.m. match at Beth-Center.
West Greene (6-5) travels to No. 5 seed St. Joseph (13-5) on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in Class A.
The Lady Raiders open the first round against the winner of Monday’s match between Quaker Valley (8-10) and Keystone Oaks (8-10) at Waynesburg Central High School on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. Section 3 foe Brownsville (16-2) plays Burrell (14-2) in the opening round in the 6 p.m. match Tuesday at Waynesburg.
The Lady Scotties (11-6) face Mohawk (13-4) on Tuesday at Seton LaSalle High School. The match is scheduled for 6 p.m.
Laurel Highlands (9-7) plays No. 5 seed Hampton (12-4) on Tuesday at Mars High School. The match is set to begin at 6 p.m. Belle Vernon (14-4) follows in the 7:30 p.m. match against the Lady Fightin’ Planets (14-4).
