Waynesburg, Brownsville volleyball teams keep rolling
Skyler Gates rang up 21 kills and nine blocks as Brownsville fought off host Washington, 3-2, in a Section 3-2A girls volleyball battle Tuesday.
The Lady Falcons (8-1, 11-1) remained in second place, one game in back of front-running Waynesburg Central, after winning by scores of 22-25, 25-18, 25-14, 26-28 and 15-12. The Lady Prexies fell to 4-5 overall and in the section.
Aijanae Foster had 15 kills and five blocks, Abigayle Thomas totaled six kills, three blocks and 11 service points and Ashley Evanshak chalked up 10 digs for Brownsville, which also got 14 service points from Emma Leigh Bailey, four kills and 13 service points from Lena Rechichar and 11 service points from Haylee Feich.
Waynesburg Central 3, Bentworth 0 — Ani Cree had 16 kills, two blocks and two digs as the first-place and undefeated Lady Raiders swept the visiting Lady Bearcats in a Section 3-2A match.
Scores were 25-8, 25-8 and 25-5.
Railey Bochna contributed five kills and four digs, Gina Tedrow accumulated 19 assists and Lelia McCollum totaled 13 digs and three aces for Waynesburg (9-0, 12-0), which also got three kills and three digs from Harper Grimes, four kills, three aces and two digs from Chatham Knight, four kills, three aces and two digs from Emily Rafferty and two blocks from Emma Blair.
Riley Bommer had 19 digs for Bentworth (2-7, 5-8) which also got five assists from Zoie McDonald and three kills from Addison Pysh.
Frazier 3, Geibel Catholic 0 — Maddie Salisbury had 14 kills and 17 service points in the first-place Lady Commodores’ Section 4-A match over the visiting Lady Gators (0-5, 1-10).
Scores were 25-16, 25-12 and 25-12.
Mia West added nine kills and six blocks for Frazier (6-0, 9-3), which also got 15 service points from Addison Hiles and 14 assists from Allie Monack.
Belle Vernon 3, Ringgold 1 — Mallory Wasicek totaled nine kills, 27 digs and six aces as the third-place Lady Leopards topped the fourth-place Lady Rams (4-4, 6-4) in a Section 3-3A match at Ringgold.
Belle Vernon (5-3, 9-3) won by scores of 25-22, 25-19, 19-25 and 27-25.
Aubrey Brown had 10 kills and four aces, and Victoria Alexander and Mia Roebuck added six kills apiece for the Lady Leopards, who also got 16 digs from Jay Johnson, 10 digs from Mailey Hayes and 25 assists from Abby Nickolls.
Boys soccer
Laurel Highlands 3, South Fayette 2 — Jack Nairn scored two goals as the Mustangs edged the visiting Lions In a Section 2-3A match.
Cole Radcliffe also scored for Laurel Highlands (5-5, 9-5) which moved into a tie with Ringgold for fourth place in the section.
Chase Hall had an assist for the Mustangs and Dan O’Neal made 15 saves.
Tyce Rectenwald had both goals for South Fayette (3-7, 3-9).
Uniontown 2, West Mifflin 0 — Ethan Roebuck’s first-half goal put the Red Raiders ahead and they hung on from there for a Section 3-3A victory over the host Titans (1-5, 2-9-1).
Ryan Sinal added a goal in the second half for Uniontown (1-6, 4-10) and goalkeeper Noah Holland made 20 saves in notching the shutout.
Southmoreland 1, Derry 0 — Liam Smith scored the only goal as the Scotties edged the host Trojans (0-9-1, 1-10-1) in a Section 4-2A match.
Southmoreland (5-5, 7-7) maintains sole possession of third place in the standings.
Thomas Jefferson 2, Albert Gallatin 0 — Goalkeeper Sam Wessel had the shutout and scored a goal as the second-place Jaguars survived an upset bid by the host Colonials (0-10, 1-12) in a Section 2-3A match.
Waynesburg Central 3, Brownsville 2 — The Raiders (3-5-1, 3-6-1) nipped the host Falcons (1-9, 3-11) in a Section 4-2A match.
Latrobe 3, Belle Vernon 0 — The host Wildcats (5-2, 6-6) blanked the Leopards in a Section 3-3A match. Morgan Bunch made seven saves for Belle Vernon (5-3, 7-7-1).
Mount Pleasant 2, Yough 0 — Grant Zahrobsky scored off a corner kick by Bryson Bankosh to break a scoreless tie in the second half and the host Vikings went on to defeat the Cougars (7-2, 8-3) and keep their grip on sole possession of second place in Section 4-2A.
Tyke Snyder added an insurance goal with an assist from Lukas Showman for Mount Pleasant (9-1, 10-4). Goalkeeper Grayson Gardner recorded the shutout.
Boys cross country
Belle Vernon 15, Calvary Christian 49; Greensburg Central Catholic 27, Belle Vernon 28 — The Leopards split a tri-meet, defeating Calvary Christian but falling by one point to the Centurions in Division II, Section 5 meet.
Belle Vernon’s Leo Soto was the overall race winner.
California 23, South Park 37; California 15, Serra Catholic 50; California 15, Southmoreland 50 — The Trojans swept a four-team Division II, Section 5 meet with victories over both of the Eagles and the Scotties.
California’s Carter Kent was the overall race winner with a time of 19:26.21.
Also finishing in the top 10 were Southmoreland’s Dylan Bierhals (second, 20:18.87), California’s Charles Meiss (fifth, 21:47.93), Southmoreland’s Stephen Redmond (sixth, 22:12.29), California’s Ian Grodz (seventh, 22:31.11) and Quin Barbero (eighth, 22:56.47), Southmoreland’s Ross Street (ninth, 23:31.72) and California’s Bode Bota (10th, 23:38.97).
Girls cross country
Belle Vernon 15, Calvary Christian 50; Belle Vernon 20, Greensburg Central Catholic 37 — The Lady Leopards triumphed over Calvary Christian and the Lady Lions in a Division II, Section 5 meet.
Belle Vernon’s Brooklyn Steeber was the overall winner of the race.
Serra Catholic 15, California 50 — The Lady Eagles beat the Lady Trojans in a Division II, Section 5 meet that also included runners from Southmoreland, South Park and Frazier.
Southmoreland’s Elizabeth Dziurzynski finished second overall with a time of 30:58.93.
Others placing in the top 10 were Frazier’s Kaitlynn Porter (eighth, 33:36.72), Southmoreland’s Abbie Ritenour (ninth, 35:05.09) and California’s Kyleigh Pagac (10th, 35:55.96).
