Local roundup: Tharp scores 1,000th point in Lady Pioneers’ victory
Kendra Tharp scored a game-high 20 points, including the 1,000th of her career, and West Greene defeated host Avella, 67-28, in Section 2-A girls basketball action Friday night.
Tharp hit the milestone on her final basket of the game coming on a driving layup midway through the fourth quarter.
Jillisssa Yeater tallied a game-high 21 points for the Lady Pioneers (5-2, 10-3) who also got 10 points apiece from Madelyn Roberts and Katie Brudnock.
Haleigh Rush and Madison Rush both had 10 points for the Lady Eagles (1-6, 4-10).
Peters Township 62, Uniontown 35 — Brie Morreale scored 20 points in the Lady Indians’ Section 4-5A win over the visiting Lady Raiders.
Maddyn Mehl had 13 points for Peters Township (2-3, 7-6).
Aierra Jenkins poured in a game-high 27 points for Uniontown (1-3, 8-5).
Ringgold 45, Frazier 16 — Jada Gernot scored 22 points as the Lady Rams (5-7) beat the Lady Commodores at the MVI Tournament on Saturday.
Alayna Macioce followed with 10 points for Ringgold.
Allie Yauch led Frazier (4-7) with 10 points.
Belle Vernon 52, Serra Catholic 46 — Aubrey Brown totaled 17 points, 12 rebounds, four blocks and two steals in the Lady Leopards’ win over Serra Catholic at the MVI Tournament Saturday.
Abby Russell contributed 11 points for Belle Vernon (10-3) and Lyla McConnell had 10.
Belle Dumbroski scored 17 points for Serra (7-4) which also got 12 points from Lexi Pearce and 10 from Niki Sfanos 10.
Boys basketball
Geibel Catholic 84, Environmental Charter 58 — Evan Strimel poured in 45 points as the visiting Gators cruised past ECS in a Section 2-A game.
Eahn Stevenson and Seth Dolan added 11 points apiece for Geibel (2-2, 8-5) which also got 10 points from John Hess.
Caleb Dalton led ECS (0-4, 4-7) with 20 points and Elijah McBride had 12.
Frazier 55, West Greene 49; Springdale 77, Frazier 50 — Kolby Stewart recorded a double-double with a game-high 26 points and 10 rebounds as Frazier defeated visiting West Greene in a non-section game Saturday.
The Commodores led 16-6 after the first quarter but the Pioneers pulled within 24-18 at halftime and trailed just 33-31 after three. Frazier used a 22-18 edge in the final frame to secure the win.
Brant Alekson added 12 points for the Commodores (5-7) who also got 10 points from Austin Stewart.
Matt Wassil led West Greene (3-8) with 22 points and was followed by Darren Knight and Jordan Hill with 10 each.
Frazier was coming off a Section 1-2A loss at Springdale (3-3, 5-7) on Friday night.
Stewart scored 24 points for the Commodores, who fell to 2-4 in section play.
Southmoreland 75, Mount Pleasant 35 — Noah Felentzer scored 27 points in the Scotties’ Section 4-3A win over the host Vikings on Friday night.
Luke Stinnette (12) and Brock Pritts (10) also hit double digits in scoring for first-place Southmoreland (4-0, 7-6).
Johah Townsend led Mount Pleasant (1-3, 3-10) with 11 points and Gage Valone had 10.
Bentworth 56, California 26 — Ben Hays scored 26 points and Bentworth (4-2, 8-3) cruised to a 56-26 victory at California.
Weston Monticelli and Alan Dennis both scored seven points for the host Trojans (0-6, 0-12).
Belle Vernon 73, Greensburg Salem 33 — Jude Minniti scored 16 points as the Leopards (5-1, 9-6) beat the visiting Lions (1-4, 5-7) in a Section 3-4A game.
Dane Daugherty sank four 3-pointers in tallying 14 points for Belle Vernon.
Chartiers-Houston 70, Mapletown 11 — Wes Yeager scored 13 points as the Buccaneers (6-0, 11-2) beat the visiting Maples (0-6, 0-12) in a Section 3-2A game.
Carson Vanata led Mapletown with five points.
Charleroi 70, Brownsville 59 — Xavion Thomas scored 16 points as the Cougars (2-2, 7-7) beat the host Falcons in a Section 4-3A game.
Jaiden Praster led Brownsville (0-4, 1-10) with 15 points and Jalen Blair added 10.
Ligonier Valley 51, Waynesburg Central 49 — Michael Wisniewski scored 18 points and Michael Vargulish-Graver had 14 as the host Rams nipped the Raiders in a Section 4-3A game.
Ligonier Valley (3-1, 7-5) overcame a 23-16 halftime deficit by out-scoring Waynesburg 24-16 in the third to take a 40-39 lead. The Rams held an 11-10 edge in the fourth quarter.
Jackson Dean led the Raiders (2-2, 4-8) with 14 points. Austin Surber contributed seven rebounds and five assists and Dane Woods also grabbed seven boards.
Central Catholic 60, Connellsville 23 — Enzo Khalil scored 16 points as Central Catholic (6-0, 12-1) beat the visiting Falcons (0-6, 4-8)) in a Section 2-6A game.
Lucas Harwood and Darius Prinkey each had six points for Connellsville.
Franklin Regional 61, Albert Gallatin 51 — Anthony Mitchell scored 15 points as the host Panthers held off the Colonials in a Section 1-5A battle.
Daniel Mossiello added 14 points for Franlin Regional (5-1, 9-3) which maintained a tie with Gateway atop the section standings.
Elliot Sines led AG (0-6, 2-10) with 12 points and was followed by Ethan Kennedy with 11 and Adam Pegg and Darrin Ford with 10 each.
