Connellsville’s Jayden Mickens wraps up Albert Gallatin’s Clayton Bolinger (4) after an 8-yard gain during Friday night’s game at Falcon Stadium.

Southmoreland quarterback Dawson Wolfe threw for 135 yards and two touchdowns and had 14 carries for 163 yards and three more scores as the Scotties trounced visiting Laurel Highlands, 54-7, at Russ Grimm Field in non-conference high school football action Friday night.

In a meeting of first-year coaches, Southmoreland improved to 3-0 under Dustin Shoaf while the Mustangs fell to 2-1 under Aaron Raffle.

Laurel Highlands played without two key starters in quarterback Noah Lion and running back Gio Guerriere who were both sidelined with injuries.

The Mustangs got off to a rough start when their first play from scrimmage resulted in a high snap that the Scotties’ Luke Stinnett recovered in the end zone for a touchdown and a 6-0 lead.

Laurel Highlands shook off the mistake and countered with a touchdown drive capped by Nick Crouch’s 3-yard run, and Jackson Nairn’s extra point put the visitors ahead 7-6.

Later in the opening quarter Wolfe scored on a 2-yard run and Averyon Darnell added a 13-yard rushing touchdown to put Southmoreland ahead 20-7.

The score remained that way until Wolfe tossed a 34-yard touchdown pass to Ty Whoric with just 11 seconds left in the first half. Liam Smith, who converted six of seven on extra-point attempts, booted the PAT and the hosts took a 27-7 lead into the locker room.

The Scotties exploded for 27 points in the third quarter.

Wolfe started the onslaught with a 43-yard touchdown run. He followed that with a 17-yard scoring pass to Jackson Mickens and then added a 5-yard TD run to give Southmoreland a 47-7 lead.
