Six-run 7th key in Connellsville Legion’s win over Charleroi

A six-run seventh inning turned a close game into a comfortable victory for Connellsville in a 9-0 victory over Charleroi in Fayette American Legion baseball action on Thursday night at Veterans Memorial Field.

Connellsville (1-0) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Chase Sankovich reached first base on a bunt single, stole single and scored on Matt Firestone’s infield single.

Connellsville added two runs in the fifth inning when Grayden Gillott doubled to center field, Sankovich reached on an error and both scored on Firestone’s double to center field for a 3-0 advantage.

Connellsville scored its six runs on two hits, and benefitted from two Charleroi errors.

Sankovich and Firestone walked to lead off the inning, and Kace Shearer was hit-by-pitch to load the bases with nobody out.

Following a strikeout, Sankovich scored on Gradin Hodge’s infield single for a 4-0 lead.

Firestone scored when starting and winning pitcher Mason Miller walked with the bases loaded for a 5-0 advantage. Shearer scored on Alex Zeigler’s infield single for a six-run lead.

Hodge and Miller scored on an error before Zeigler scored the ninth run on an error.

Miller didn’t allow a run on two hits over six innings. He struck out eight and walked four. Firestone pitched a 1-2-3 seventh with one strikeout.
