Local roundup: St. Joseph ends Lady Pioneers’ season
Kasey Cienik scored 16 points and St. Joseph rode a big third quarter to a WPIAL Class A consolation victory over visiting West Greene in girls basketball action Monday night.
The loss put an end to the Lady Pioneers’ season while the Lady Spartans secured a spot in the PIAA tournament.
St. Joseph (18-8) led 9-8 after the first quarter and 19-18 at halftime before out-scoring West Greene 20-5 in the third to take a 39-23 advantage. Both teams scored 15 points in the fourth quarter.
Gia Richter and Belle Bartolovic added 14 and 10 points for the Lady Spartans.
Kendra Tharp led the Lady Pioneers (16-9) with 10 points.
Boys basketball
Ellwood City 60, Southmoreland 57 – Aaron Lake tossed in 18 points as the Wolverines defeated the host Scotties in a WPIAL Class 3A consolation game.
Ellwood City (15-10) clinched a spot in the PIAA tournament with the win.
The Wolverines led 17-13, 34-29 and 51-45 at the quarter breaks.
Maykel Cuevas added 15 points for Ellwood City.
Noah Felentzer scored a game-high 24 points for Southmoreland (18-7) which can still secure a state berth with a consolation win at Keystone Oaks on Wednesday.
