Track and field roundup: Lady Trojans narrowly claim track section title

California earned the Section 6-2A title in girls track and field by the slimmest of margins, edging host Waynesburg Central on a tiebreaker after the two finished in a 73-73 tie in their meet with Bentworth and Beth-Center.

The Lady Trojans edged the Lady Raiders thanks to more first-place finishes but fell to Bentworth, 72-60, leaving them tied with Brownsville atop the section standings, but California claimed the section plaque thanks to its head-to-head win over the Lady Falcons.

Waynesburg defeated the Lady Bulldogs, 104-37, and the Lady Bearcats topped B-C, 97-28.

Ella Neil gave California a boost by winning all three jumping events, placing first in the high jump (5-0), long jump (16-1.5) and triple jump (31-4.5). Morgan Ross gave the Lady Trojans a sweep of the sprints by winning the 100 (13.25) and 200 (28.68).

Other individual winners for California were Ella Fike in the 300 hurdles (54.53) and Peyton Sunderman in the discus (83-8).

Individual winners for Waynesburg were Railey Bochna in the 100 high hurdles (17.49), Peyton Cowell in the shot put (27-8) and Madison Blair in the pole vault (8-0). The Lady Raiders also won the 400 relay with Blair, Addison Cowell, Lelia McCollum and Blair Gansor (56.18).

Bentworth was paced by Jesse Laskey, who won the 1,600 (6:13.48) and the 800 (2:45.79) and combined with Riley Nicholls, Madelyn Johns and Brielle Dillon to place first in the 3,200 relay (11:49.30).

The Lady Bearcats also got individual wins from Johns in the 400 (1:08.02), Delilah Luketich in the 3,200 (15:05.06) and Elizabeth Wade in the javelin (94-0), and took first in the 1,600 relay with Megan Keturakis, Emme Orsatti, Nicholls and Johns (4:54.51).

Belle Vernon 83, Elizabeth Forward 74 – Chase Mertz won the long jump (20-0) and the triple jump (40-5.5) and teamed up with Dominico Congelio, Robert Allshouse and Trevor Kovatch to win the 400 relay as the Leopards beat the Warriors in a Section 2-3A meet.

Belle Vernon’s Ryan Kent won the javelin (149-9) and the discus (148-4). Other individual winners for Belle Vernon were Allshouse in the 200 (25.29), Anthony Riccuit in the 800 (2:37), Sam Ruschak in the 1,600 (5:45), Riley Nemosek in the 3,200 (13:38) and Jacob Ziolkowski in the 300 hurdles (49.85).

The Leopards (2-1) won the 3,200 relay with Ziolkowski, Leonidas Soto, Ruschak and Long Metzger (9:53).

Mount Pleasant 103, Frazier 37 – Rylin Bugosh, Adi Gardner and Maddie Barrick each won two individual events as the Lady Vikings beat the Lady Commodores in a Section 8-2A meet.

Bugosh was first in the 100 (13.33) and 200 (27.71), Gardner was victorious in the 100 high hurdles (18.57) and the 300 hurdles (55.52) and Barrich won the 800 (2:39.33) and finished in a three-way tie for the top spot in the pole vault (5-0) with teammates Brooklyn Ulery and Ella Paul.

Other individual winners for Mount Pleasant were Laurel Rummel in the 1,600 (6:45.17), Kaylea Voke in the 3,200 (13:51.49), Vivian Brasil Paroda in the shot put (22-11), Colbie Potoka in the javelin (82-1), Victoria Tepper in the high jump (4-3) and Abby Dillon in the 400 (1:24.48),

Mount Pleasant swept the relays with times of 59.02 in the 400, 5:08.66 in the 1,600 and 12:57.43 in the 3,200.

Elisabeth Keaton was a double winner for Frazier, playing first in the long jump (14-11) and triple jump (31-10.5). The Lady Commodores’ Liara Snyder won the discus (65-4).

Boys track and field

California 78, Waynesburg Central 72; California 116, Bentworth 25; Waynesburg Central 115, Beth-Center 34; Bentworth 70*, Beth-Center 70 – The Trojans picked up wins over the Raiders and Bearcats in a Section 6-2A meet.

Waynesburg topped the Bulldogs and the Bearcats nipped B-C on a tiebreaker (9-8 in first-place finishes).

Lee Qualk and Carter Kent were double winners for California. Qualk won the 100 (11:48) and the long jump (21-4) and Kent was first in the 1,600 (4:58.09) and the 800 (2:16.77).

Other individual winners for the Trojans were Alan Dennis in the 200 (23.60), Christian Ross in the triple jump (41-5) and Andrew Typovsky in the javelin (148.5). California also placed first in the 3,200 relay (9:30.62) and the 400 relay (45.22).

The Raiders’ Zack Andrews won the 110 high hurdles (16.82) and the 300 hurdles (43.31).

Other individual winners for Waynesburg were Alex Eck in the 400 (55.20), Jack Riccuiti in the high jump (6-0), Duncan Barto in the shot put (38-11), Caden Fowler in the discus (126-1.5) and Jackson Brunell in the pole vault (12-0). The Raiders also won the 1,600 relay with Preston Scattaregia, Mylo Snyder, Isaac McCartney and Ferdinand Martinez (3:49.57).

Beth-Center’s Brandon Remington was first in the 3,200 (11:19.61).

Belle Vernon 105, Elizabeth Forward 47 – Courtney Martin and Brooklyn Steeber each won three individual events as the Lady Leopards topped the Lady Warriors in a Section 2-3A meet.

Martin was first in the 100 (13.34), 100 high hurdles (15.93) and 300 hurdles (54.18), and Steeber won the 800 (2:35), 1,600 (6:08) and 3,200 (14:54).

Other individual winners for Belle Vernon (3-0) were Grace West in the 200 (29.10), Bella Tatar in the 400 (1:09), Eternal Joy in the long jump (14-2), Marissa Naylor in the high jump (4-6) and Skylar Salay in the discus (71-0).

The Lady Leopards also won the 400 relay with Tayshia Harvey, Naylor, West and Martin (54.06) and the 3,200 relay with Lizzy Tatar, Steeber, Lily Walsh and Belle Tatar (12:22).

Mount Pleasant 125, Frazier 14 – The Vikings won every event in defeating the Commodores in a Section 8-2A meet.

Aidan Johnson was first in the 110 high hurdles (18.07), the 300 hurdles (45.84) and the triple jump (40-0), and Bryson Bankosh won the 400 (54.83), high jump (4-11) and long jump (19-11) for Mount Pleasant.

Double individual winners for the Vikings were Jarett Garn in the 100 (12.17) and 200 (23.50), Damien Ohler in the 800 (2.29.45) and 1,600 (5:40.76) and Gage Sowers in the shot put (36-4) and pole vault (13-1).

Other individual winners for Mount Pleasant were Sean Painter in the 3,200 (13:37.84), Payton Schaum in the discus (101-11) and Andrew Brodak in the javelin (90-5). The Vikings swept the relays with times of 49.86 in the 400, 4:32.28 in the 1,600 and 12:47.76 in the 3,200.

Earning second-place finishes for Frazier were Chris Petruska in the 400, Tanner Merrill in the 1,600, Trey Whitehead in the javelin and Ryan Sinal in the high jump.
