LETTER: Invest in our future
Last month in an interview with Laura Ingraham of Fox News Donald Trump stated that America lacks a certain talent pool while he was defending his recent changes to the H-1B visa program. This particular visa is what allows domestic employers to hire skilled professionals for temporary periods of time in sectors that require outside expertise. The issue is that these visas greatly undermine American workers and undercut their wages. Additionally, they expand our reliance on foreign labor, foreign skills, and foreign education. My counter proposal is to invest in our own citizens and our own future. If there truly is a lack of talent in STEM fields, as President Trump claims, then let’s offer incentives for US citizens to develop these talents. We could offer student loans at little to no interest for students in certain fields, such as STEM. Better yet, we could offer significant merit based scholarships for students in STEM fields. Investing in our own work force is a far more sustainable long term investment than continuing down the broken road of foreign dependency.
