LETTER: Please protect our health care
It’s hard to overstate how important good health insurance is for our overall well-being. I would know as a Stage 3 melanoma survivor who wouldn’t have been able to afford my lifesaving care without health insurance. For me, comprehensive, affordable health insurance meant being able to get screened for cancer, receive immunotherapy and undergo live-saving surgeries to remove the cancer that had been spreading silently through my body. Affordable health insurance gave me continued access to the prescriptions that helped me to feel well enough to work and take care of my family while battling cancer and have the follow-up care needed for life as a survivor. It can mean the difference between life and death. In my case, it did.
That’s why I’m so concerned about the expiration of the enhanced premium tax credits in Pennie, our state’s insurance marketplace. Individuals who rely on these tax credits to be able to afford their coverage – these are individuals working hard to just get by – are facing skyrocketing costs for 2026 health insurance plans if Congress doesn’t take action to extend these tax credits. We all know what this would mean for a cancer patient in active treatment.
We can’t let this happen.
If Congress doesn’t act now, hard-working Pennsylvanians will be forced to compromise on their health to keep their heads above water.
That’s why I’m urging Pennsylvania Sen. Dave McCormick to work with his fellow members of Congress to extend these tax credits before it’s too late.
