Hersel J. “Joe” Smalley, of Vanderbilt, passed away Thursday, May 21, 2026, in Uniontown Hospital. He was born September 21, 1944, in Connellsville, a son of the late Charles and Julia Smith Smalley.
Joe proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy and was a lifelong lover of the outdoors. He enjoyed archery, rifle hunting, quad and dirt bike riding, and had a deep appreciation for music. He was also dedicated to physical fitness throughout his life. Known for his humor and adventurous spirit, Joe was a jokester and daredevil, who would do anything to make others laugh.
Joe was the owner of Joe Smalley Home Improvements for more than 50 years. He was also the co-owner of ABC School House Educational Child Care and Pre-School.
He is survived by his loving wife, Margaret Rafail Smalley; his daughter, Hannah “Chrissy” Steiner and husband William J. Steiner of Donegal; his granddaughter, April Steiner Niyamuddin and husband Dr. Tony Niyamuddin of Mt. Pleasant; three great- grandchildren, Owen, Sophie and Miles Niyamuddin, who brought him immense love and joy.
Joe is also survived by two sisters, Millicent “Nicki” Monohan and husband Ralph of Connellsville, and Michaelina “Beanie” Bolish and husband Greg of Dunbar; one brother, Willard “Butch” Smalley and wife Carolyn of Normalville; his lifelong friend and honorary brother, Joe Baluch of Connellsville; and numerous nieces and nephews, cousins, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, and many loving family members and friends.
In addition to his parents, Joe was preceded in death by his brothers, Effen Smalley and William A. Smalley; and his sister, Bernice “Jean” Hunt.
Friends will be received Sunday, May 24, from 2 to 5 p.m. in GATES FUNERAL HOME, 136 N. Gallatin Avenue, Uniontown, with prayer service and military honors at 5 p.m. followed by a memorial dinner, in Joe’s honor. Private interment Green Ridge Memorial Park at a later date.
The family would like to thank the care teams at Jefferson and Uniontown Hospitals, as well as special caregivers Katelyn, Kyle, Dr. Goisse, and the many friends and family members who provided love and support throughout this time.
