Melanie Sue Hughes, 53, of Dunbar, entered into her eternal life Tuesday, January 13, 2026, in Penn Highlands Hospital after a courageous battle with heart disease and related cardiac issues. She was born June 28, 1972 in Mount Pleasant, the daughter of Anna I. “Susie” Wingard Tabaj of Dunbar Township and the late Matthew A. “Mattie” Tabaj.

Melanie was a graduate of Connellsville High School and worked as a CNA for many years.

She was an avid football fan and a lover of all animals. She was dedicated to her family and pets and she was the sweetest, kindest person who would do anything for anybody; she was selfless, compassionate and giving to all.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband, Louis V. Hughes, Jr.; her sons, Louis V. Hughes, III and wife Shalamare of Connellsville, and Aaron Hughes and wife Jessica of Dunbar; grandchildren, Ian Hughes, Maveryk Hughes, William Hughes, Octavias Hughes, Jasper Hughes, Brayden Hughes, her “Lil Diva” Katelyn Hughes and Conner Hughes; her sister, Michelle Tabaj and husband Jeremy Cummings of Uniontown; her seven special “fur babies” and numerous stray animals. Melanie took care of any animal that came her way and was in need of care. She is also survived by several aunts, uncles and cousins.

In addition to her late father, she was predeceased by several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Family and friends will be received from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday, January 16, in the BROOKS FUNERAL HOME, INC., 111 E. Green Street, Connellsville, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 17, with the Rev. Bruce A. Anthony officiating.

The family would like to extend a loving heartfelt thank you to all of the family and friends who provided Melanie with support, encouragement, and humor during her illness. Special thanks to Dr. Goldwasser, Dr. Navid and Dr. Waheed for their wonderful care and kindness toward Melanie during her illness.
