June Hess

New Salem
June “Junebug” Hess, 98, of New Salem, passed away Friday evening, October 17, 2025. She was born January 4, 1927 in Adah, a daughter of the late William and Mabel Smith Thomas.
June was a former member of The New Salem First Christian Church.
As a young woman, she worked in a factory, but most of her life, she was a caregiver and housekeeper. June was a dedicated mother, grandmother, and aunt to many. She remained close to her family all of her life.
June loved gardening and cooking and often spent time making flower crafts or delicious food for her family and friends that would stop by to visit her and her partner of over 20 years, Harry Steiner, whom she shared a home with in New Salem.
She was creative and prided herself on cleanliness; she was an extraordinary hard worker both inside and outside of her home. She was a kind and generous person, who put a smile on the face of strangers and made her family always feel loved. June was soft and feminine, but tough and determined all at the same time. She was a woman of faith and loved humming hymns and talking about God and how blessed she was to always have another day of life. June was surrounded by her family during her last days and was certain to tell everyone how much she loved them.
Besides her parents, June was preceded in death by two sons, William Leslie Brummett and Darrell Lynn Brummett; seven brothers, Adam, Ray, Jack, Herbie, Lee, Roy, and Donnie; six sisters, Ruth, Dolores “Tootsie”, Audrey, Ellen, Pearl, and Evelyn.
June is survived by her daughter, Bonnie Bakos; her sister, Nancy Shazer; six grandchildren, Billy Bakos and wife Sherri, Karen Daley, Michelle Bakos, Sean Bakos, William Brummett, and Charlie Brummett; 11 great- grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews; special friend and companion, Harry Steiner; and her cat, Angel.
Friends will be received in the SKIRPAN FUNERAL HOME, 135 Park Street, Brownsville, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, October 22, and from 10 until the time of a funeral service at 11 a.m. Thursday, October 23, with the Rev. Andy Miles officiating. Interment will follow in Redstone Cemetery.
