A California Area High School student was killed Friday night in an electric dirt bike accident.

Jim Smith, California police chief, said a 16-years old male was driving the electric dirt bike near Highland Drive behind Adamson Stadium at about 8:30 p.m.

Responding officers found a motorcycle into a tree which had fallen across the road. The driver’s helmet was located on the roadway.

“The responding police units located the operator of the bike over a small embankment,” Smith said. “He was unresponsive.”

The victim, whose name has not been released, was initially taken to Penn Highlands Mon Valley Hospital, before being transferred to UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, then Allegheny General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 3:30 a.m. Saturday.

“There’s nothing suspicious,” Smith said. “It’s a freak accident.”

Dr. Laura Jacob, superintendent of the California Area School District, posted a letter on social media informing the “Trojan Family” of the tragedy.

“Grief is an intensely personal journey, and there is no universal ‘right’ way to navigate the landscape of loss,” the letter reads. “While one person might find solace in outward expression – sharing memories and leaning on a community – another may retreat into a quiet, private reflection to process their pain. Some people experience grief as a sharp, immediate shock, while for others, it arrives as a slow, dull ache that settles in over time.”

Jacob said crisis support will be available at the district Monday with licensed professionals and counselors on site all day. A therapy dog team will be present throughout the day as well.

“The California Area Trojan family mourns with and offers our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones most closely impacted by this tragedy,” Jacob said in the letter. “We stand together as a community, united in support of the daily during this profound loss. In times of heartache, our collective strength comes from the way we care for one another, ensuring that no one has to navigate their grief in isolation.”
