A Republic candy company says it will continue operating at its current home while the building is up for sale.

Redstone Candy Co.’s building at 1736 New Salem Road was recently listed for sale for $825,000.

The building is owned by Redstone Distributing, which was sold to a West Virginia company about nine years ago. Spencer Coletta, a co-owner of Redstone Candy, said he is part of a group that purchased the candy portion of the business.

Redstone Candy’s lease runs through 2030, which will keep the business there at least that long, Coletta said. So far, he said, no potential buyers have visited the property.

“Someone comes in and buys the building, they want to ask for four times the rent, that would change the equation on us going past 2030,” he said. “We’ve got to keep our candy prices as low as possible for Fayette County, because that’s what they expect.”

The company has been at the New Salem Road location since late 1983. It began making confections in 1947 out of its original location at a chocolate shop on Main Street in Republic.
