A Pittsburgh man who allegedly caused a fatal two-vehicle crash in Menallen Township last August while under the influence of narcotics has been charged with third-degree murder.

James Eugene Temple, 45, had been behind the wheel of a Dodge Ram driving southbound on Route 51 north of Laurel Hill Road when he crossed a grass median and entered the northbound lane, colliding with another vehicle, police said. The other driver, John Humbert, 65, of Donora, was killed in the Aug. 20 crash.

Temple told police he had ingested a partial baggie of heroin earlier that day after being released from the Allegheny County Jail, according to the criminal complaint. He told police the last thing he recalled was leaving the Star Junction area, about 7 miles north.

Testing of Temple’s blood found THC, carboxy-THC and fentanyl, the complaint said. Police said he had 4.7 nanograms per milliliter of narcotics in his system when tested.

Temple faces felony charges of third-degree murder, aggravated assault and homicide by vehicle with corresponding charges for driving under the influence.

A warrant was issued for Temple’s arrest.
