Greene County man charged in Peters Township hit-and-run
Peters Township police charged a Greene County man Friday for allegedly hitting a woman with his car and driving away last month.
Keith Patrick Shearer, 47, of Jefferson Township, faces felony charges of accidents involving death or personal injury, aggravated assault by vehicle, and a misdemeanor of reckless endangerment.
According to the criminal complaint, shortly before 5:30 p.m. Nov. 18, Shearer struck 79-year-old Sally Sherfinski with his vehicle while she was in a crosswalk in the 4000 block of Washington Road.
Sherfinski was walking from the Key Bank parking lot to the Atria’s restaurant. She was transported to Allegheny General Hospital in critical condition. According to the complaint, she suffered a broken tibia and fibula in her left leg, two broken vertebrae and two subdural hematomas.
Using surveillance cameras from several businesses in the area, police were able to determine that Shearer was driving a 2005 Buick LeSabre at the time of the incident.
Footage shows the vehicle accelerating through the stop sign to McDowell Shops and Crosswinds Drive after striking Sherfinski, and then driving west on Crosswinds Drive toward Washington Road.
According to the complaint, the Buick was in Shearer’s driveaway at his home in the 100 block of Eaton Run Road. Shearer told investigators that he works in Peters Township, and that he stopped at Applebee’s for a drink before going home.
Charging documents state that Shearer claimed to have one beer and two shots.
He denied that he hit Sherfinski, but said to police “maybe there’s a chance I blacked out,” and “maybe I didn’t see it,” court documents state.
Shearer also faces summary offenses of careless driving, reckless driving, duties at a stop sign, failing to yield right of way to a pedestrian and failing to stop and give information or render aid.
There is an active warrant for Shearer’s arrest.
