Copperheads finish busy week undefeated

Carmichaels took care of business in an 11-1 victory over Youghiongheny on Sunday in Fayette County Baseball League (FCBL) play.

The Copperheads improved to 9-1 this season, with their lone blemish being to the undefeated PV Mudcats (10-0). Coach Dickie Krause’s team has a rematch with the Mudcats this Tuesday at Carmichaels.

Gianni Cantini earned the victory on the mound after allowing one unearned run on three hits over five innings. He had six strikeouts and no walks.

Carmichaels scored two runs in the first inning, one in the second, five in the third and three in the fourth. Youghiogheny (3-7) scored its run in the bottom of the fifth, but the game ended after five innings due to the 10-run rule.

A.J. Vanata doubled and drove in three runs for the Copperheads. Teammates Santino Marra, Dom Obiecunas and Alex VanSickle had two hits apiece. Obiecunas had two RBIs.

Saturday, June 28

Carmichaels 9, Oakland 1 — The Copperheads scored eight unanswered runs to break a tie in FCBL action at Carmichaels Area High School baseball field.

Carmichaels scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth frame for a 4-1 lead. A.J. Vanata had a two-run double, and Alex VanSickle doubled in a run for the three-run advantage.

VanSickle and Vanata drove in runs with singles in the Copperheads’ five-run sixth. Both finished with three RBIs apiece. Teammate Hunter Hamilton drove in a run with a double.

Santino Marra earned the win on the mound after allowing one run on three hits over five innings. He struck out three and walked two. Marra had one of Carmichaels’ four doubles.

Andino Vecchiolla didn’t allow a run or hit over one inning of work. He had three strikeouts and walked one. VanSickle finished the game in the seventh with a scoreless frame. The recent Waynesburg Central graduate didn’t allow a hit with two strikeouts and no walks.

Wenkai Campbell, who led the Oaks with two hits, tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the fifth on a solo home run.

Wednesday, June 25

Carmichaels 12, Mill Run 0 — Andino Vecchiolla drove in four runs as Carmichaels blanked Mill Run at Wharton Township Recreational Park in Farmington.

The Copperheads (8-1) scored eight runs in the first inning and Gavin Pratt pitched a two-hit shutout over five innings. The game ended following the fifth inning due to the 10-run rule. Pratt had eight strikeouts and walked two in earning the win on the mound.

Vecchiolla was 2 for 3 and scored one run. The Laurel Highlands graduate knocked in three runs on a triple in the top of the fifth frame to increase the visitors lead to 12-0. He drove in former Mustang teammate Santino Marra with a single to right field in the top of the first inning to score the game’s first run. Marra had doubled in the previous at-bat.

Dom Obiecunas doubled and scored when Gianni Cantini walked with the bases loaded. Pratt drove in two runs with a single to left field and Alex VanSickle knocked in two with a triple to right field in the first frame. The recent Waynesburg Central graduate had two hits. Pratt finished with three RBIs.

Kace Shearer and Luke Warrick each had a single for the Millers (1-5).

Tuesday, June 24

Carmichaels 12, Brownsville 0 — The Copperheads’ trio of Matt Bamford, Drake Long and Robbie Wilson-Jones combined for a six-hit shutout at Redstone Field in Republic.

Bamford set the tone for Carmichaels by allowing four hits over five innings. He had 12 strikeouts and walked two in earning the victory. Long pitched a one-hit sixth and Wilson-Jones a one-hit seventh to close the game out. Long had one strikeout and one walk, and Wilson-Jones had one strikeout and no walks.

The Copperheads scored the only run they would need in the top of the first inning when Alex VanSickle doubled to right field and scored on Andino Vecchiolla’s base hit to center field for a 1-0 lead.

Carmichaels added another run in the second before scoring four in the fifth, and three apiece in the sixth and seventh frames.

Vecchiolla hit a three-run inside-the-park home run that scored VanSickle and Gavin Pratt in the sixth inning. VanSickle had a two-run double in the seventh before scoring on Pratt’s single to center field. VanSickle had a game-high three hits.

A.J. Vanata had a run-scoring double in the fifth inning.

Wyatt Nehls doubled for Brownsville. Teammate Gene Thorpe had two singles.
