Bach Choir of Pittsburgh presents America250PA choral series featuring Sing Democracy 250
The Bach Choir of Pittsburgh, in collaboration with singers from the South Hills Chorale and other choirs throughout the Pittsburgh region, will present the America250PA Choral Series featuring Sing Democracy 250 on Friday, July 3, at 7:30 p.m. at the O’Reilly Theater in Pittsburgh’s Cultural District.
Created to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the United States, this special concert features two newly commissioned choral works that invite audiences to reflect on the promises, challenges, and responsibilities of American democracy.
The program includes “Redeem the Dream” by composer Dr. Brandon A. Boyd, based on Langston Hughes’ landmark poem “Let America Be America Again.” Written during the Great Depression, Hughes’ poem examines the gap between the ideals expressed in the Declaration of Independence and the lived experiences of many Americans, while ultimately expressing hope that the nation can fulfill its promise of freedom, equality, and opportunity for all.
Also featured is “US” by composer Michael Bussewitz-Quarm, inspired by Richard Haass’ bestselling book “The Bill of Obligations.” The work explores 10 obligations of citizenship and concludes with a call for Americans to actively engage in the civic responsibilities that sustain a healthy democracy.
