At the Humane Society of Greene County, the top priority is making sure the animals that are adopted go to the right home, said Director Jane Gapen.

“We ask for potential adopters to fill out an application first and if approved, we set up a time for you to come in and visit with the animals. We have a very tiny staff, so this way, you have an hour with us, and we’re totally focused on you,” Gapen said.

Trainers come each week to evaluate and socialize the animals, taking them to the park, a farmer’s market or other public outings.

“Our trainers get to know these dogs inside and out, and I often schedule adoptions on the same day they are here so we can fill you in on all the specifics,” Gapen said.

To make certain an animal and its adopted family are right for one another, Gapen said the humane society has a 30-day trial period.

“We want this to be a good fit. We’ve done the background work and we’re pretty thorough, but our adopters are like gold to us, so we want everyone to be happy,” Gapen said.

Beyond sheltering and adopting pets, the nonprofit humane society also conducts investigations into animal cruelty cases. Gapen said she has “seen things that you can’t unsee” during her time at the humane society. Many animals are there because they were in neglectful or abusive homes, she said.

While some people believe animals that have been abused will be mean or aggressive, Gapen said her experience has been the opposite.

“Typically, when an abused dog realizes that you’re their friend, they never leave your side. They know you can be trusted, and they appreciate it,” Gapen said, noting that training for cruelty investigations is costly.

The nonprofit relies on grants and donations, she said. Financial contributions are appreciated, and there is a “needs” list on the organization’s website. Gapen said volunteers are also welcome.

Most of all, there is a need for loving people who want to give an animal a forever home.

“We have a lot of supporters who have been very loyal,” Gapen said. “I hope we can continue the work we’re doing here for the animals.”
