Kwanzaa celebration to be held Dec. 27 in Uniontown
The African American History & Cultural Center of Fayette County is holding its second Kwanzaa Celebration on Saturday, Dec. 27 from 3 to 5 p.m.
Kwanzaa is a Swahili word that means first fruits. The non-religious holiday occurs from Dec. 26 until Jan. 1, and was first introduced in 1966 by Dr. Maulana Karenga. Each day of Kwanzaa highlights a core principle like unity, self-determination, and creativity, fostering community spirit and reflection.
The event will include an overview of the principles of the holiday, food, and a small gift for each attendee. The Heinz Endowments is a partner of this celebration. Dr. Sarah Saunders is seeking information on quality-of-life indicators in the community. There is an opportunity to be entered into a $100 raffle with the prize determined by the end of the year.
The free event will be held at 355 Connellsville Street, Uniontown.
