Laurel Highlands Outdoor School continues tradition
In 1971, Hutchinson Elementary teacher Roy P. Fischer launched a five-day environmental camp for his fifth-grade students. It was an instant hit. Just two years later, the program expanded district-wide, bringing every elementary school in the Laurel Highlands School District into the adventure.
Fifty-five years later, that original vision has evolved into the Laurel Highlands Outdoor School. While the program has grown and changed over the decades, its core mission remains exactly what Fischer intended: fostering a deep appreciation for the local environment and its place in world history. Beyond the science, it remains a vital rite of passage — helping fifth-graders build independence, gain self-confidence, and forge new friendships as they prepare for the transition to middle school.
This year’s camp took place May 20-22 and May 26-27.
To honor that legacy this year, Hutchinson Elementary put together a special display featuring vintage Outdoor School shirts, including several from Fischer’s personal collection. To bring the history full circle, this year’s shirt colors were inspired by one of his own favorite designs, and his initials have been permanently added to the logo, ensuring his spirit rides along with every camper.
